Guitar chords
slavezombie
books on guitar lessons are helpful, but far too advanced for me. I have a Metallica book and various tabs printed off the internet. However, those riffs and songs I try to teach myself lack one important thing. Although they are helpful in practicing fingering frets and stroking strings, I still can't grasp the concept of chords. I'm hoping that I will gain some familiarity after I teach myself Michelle mabelle by THE BEATLES. This is a song I've always wanted to memorize the lyrics to, but quickly lost interest. Now I'm hoping to memorize the fret positions for the various chords used in the song.

I learned to use TABs with Beatles songs also.

Focus first on getting the jist[sound]of the song down, first.
In other words,
- take a song you already know well, and
- strum the chord as remember it in the song, and until you're close to the song itself.

It may not sound exactly like in the song but that's prolly cuz
- the song's guitarist plays it differently or
- only plays certain notes of the chord, or
- the TABlature you're playing is only for the "rhythm" section (as opposed to lead, or melodic) of the song's guitarwork.

It's easier than it looks and you learn alot more and alot
faster if you just fuck with sound of it and make as many
mistakes as possible.

There are also TAB books for leadwork and solo jams but
they're labelled accordingly.

Thx for the vote of encouragement. I know this monospace rendition of the song may be appalling to hard core text format tab readers. I mean, I'm not sure, but I think tabs got from the net also account for the beat in each "measure/bar" and I didn't bother with that since I have the actual sheet music. I transformed it into guitar tabs as the sheet music I have is designed for piano.

I'm just strumming the chords to the beat until I reach a different chord. My objective is to familiarize myself with springing from one chord to the next with facility, and hopefully memorizing them. Eventually, I'll move on to lead guitar. For now… it's a miracle that I've pulled my guitar out of it's case. If you ever need a lead for your band, or even a rythm guitarist, we should hook up some time. I lean toward loud obnoxious melodies, as sinister as a minor key will allow.

I've been toying with the idea of writing music as an extension of a growing unstoppable in me, but the kind of music i draw inspiration from [Killing Joke, Ministry, Underworld, Pet Shop Boys, Leftfield, Electrafixion, Gang of Four, Konono No.1, Maldita Vecindad] is totally unknown and - worse - unrelatable to anyone i know who does music.

I saw MINISTRY for the first time last April at HOB. They were great! My exgf, the one I'm always carrying on about, liked PET SHOP BOYS. And I loved the movie Train spotting. I wish I could write like that. I didn't know UNDERWORLD was behind the song Born slippy. That song made the whole movie.

Writing is difficult and I wish you luck. I try and I try to get myself to illustrate something remotely comparable to today's editorial cartoons in the newspaper/web, but although I can copy them freehand, I can't seem to get myself to conjur up a concept on my own. No wonder those artists make a better living than I do. It's hard being creative.

W/ever you do, don't write off rhythm guitar too quickly. There are some very very good rhythm guitarists out there who can more than hold their own and even beat lead guitarists off a stage.
In fact, listen to most lead work and you'll see there's either a great rhythm guitar (or awesome bassist) providing meat-n'-substance to the song or else the leadwork kinda would fall down soon enough.
Bo Diddley is a great example ("Hey Bo Diddley",etc.....Youtube is awesome),
the gang of four's guitarist too, and i really like
Killing Joke's Geordie Walker - who even Jimmy
Page [Zeppelin] considers an influence, and
Geordie's never played a solo in his life! Is totally
against them, actually.
Anyway, play away and enjoy the 6 greatest strings mankind has ever known....

Also should add Daniel Ash of Bauhaus/Love&Rockets (check out "Ying Yang the Flower Pot Man" done on an acoustic 12-string) and Will Sergeant of Echo&theBunnymen/Electrafixion. The Electrafixion rhythm work is superb.

P.S. Rhythmwork can be melodic too, as the above can show.
